Jack Shelley is a pioneer of broadcast journalism. During World War II, he covered the Battle of the Bulge and the surrender of the Japanese on the battleship Missouri for WHO Radio in Des Moines. After the war, he returned to Iowa, where he was assistant news director and then became news director for both radio and television at WHO until 1965, when he joined Iowa State University. He was an associate professor of journalism until his retirement in May 1982. Shelley also helped found the Iowa Broadcast News Association, an organization that honored him by establishing the Jack Shelley Award.
