Ruth Ellen Church (1933) was a longtime food writer and critic at The Chicago Tribune. Church, who wrote as Mary Meade, was food editor, cooking editor and a columnist for 38 years before retiring in 1974. She developed the newspaper’s test kitchen, among the first in the industry, and became the first American writing a regular wine column. Church authored several books including The Indispensable Guide for the Modern Cook, The Burger Cookbook, and Entertaining With Wine.
