Bio
Chris Cuellar is communications director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association in Boone, Iowa.
Prior to joining the IHSAA in 2017, Cuellar was a sports journalist at the Des Moines Register, covering wrestling, college recruiting, University of Iowa football, all high school sports, youth sports, soccer and the occasional restaurant review over six years. His reporting earned numerous awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association and Iowa Associated Press Media Editors for sports feature and enterprise writing.
At the IHSAA, he serves the nonprofit and its 370 member schools by promoting Iowa high school boys’ sports, teams and student-athletes. His duties include media relations, public relations, all digital and print communications, sports information, archives, and event management. Chris created an undergraduate internship program for communications and sports information and is the first staff member of color in his organization’s history.
Cuellar graduated from Greenlee in 2011 and has an M.A. in strategic communication from the University of Iowa. He also volunteers as a mentor with YSS in Boone and as a board member with K-12 mental health nonprofit Please Pass The Love in Des Moines.
Cuellar met his wife Torey (Robinson) at Greenlee and through work at the Iowa State Daily. They now live in Bondurant with their son, Wes, and husky, Ames, and enjoy travel, exercise, news and a great meal.
