LIGHTS, CAMERA, CLASS

Assistant Professor Tracy Lucht’s lecture on “sob sisters” and “stunt reporters” who broke down gender barriers in journalism appeared on C-SPAN’s “Lectures in American History” program in January 2017. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

A mainstay at Greenlee for almost 20 years, [Kathy Box retired](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/03/31/greenlees-administrative-specialist-retires-after-19-5-years/) from Iowa State March 31, 2017, and was honored with a reception at Hamilton. The administrative specialist worked with two directors and witnessed the unit’s transition from a department to a school. She now resides in Colorado.

CERTIFIED FOR SUCCESS

The Public Relations Society of America conferred a [Certification in Education for Public Relations to the Greenlee School](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/05/05/greenlees-pr-degree-program-receives-approval-for-prsa-certification-in-education-for-public-relations/) Oct. 7. The certification endorses the bachelor of science degree in public relations. Alyssa Rutt, program coordinator, and Erin Wilgenbusch, APR, senior lecturer, assembled the unit’s self-study and arranged a site visit last year. Rutt attended the ceremony in Boston.

END OF AN ERA

Colleagues, friends and family honored Professor Michael Bugeja for his 14 years of service as the school’s director at an April 2017 recognition reception in at the Brunnier Art Museum. Bugeja is on sabbatical this academic year and will return to teaching at Greenlee in fall 2018.

BE HEARD

The school held its 15th annual First Amendment celebration last April. Events included four [depth and dialogue sessions](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1661295167231112.1073741877.321168877910421&type=1&l=d4e4702c9f), a concert by [Freedom Sings](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1661548113872484.1073741878.321168877910421&type=1&l=a0aead3a2a), the [Feast on the First](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1663190517041577.1073741879.321168877910421&type=1&l=6e9c4dcedc) and a demonstrative march attended by students from North High School in Des Moines. [Glenn Smith](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/04/19/3008/), watchdog/public service editor for The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, delivered the keynote.

NETWORK LIKE A PRO

The Des Moines chapter of the American Advertising Federation teamed up with Iowa State’s Advertising Club to host a speed dating-style Meet the Pros networking event for Iowa State students and local professionals in March 2017 at Hamilton Hall.

TELLING THE STORY

Joe Starita, author and journalism professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, [visited Greenlee](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/04/12/5-storytelling-tips-for-journalists-gleaned-from-author-joe-starita/) to meet with students and share his book, A Warrior of the People: How Susan La Flesche Overcame Racial and Gender Inequality to Become America’s First Indian Doctor. Lecturer Lisa Oakes, a mentee of Starita, helped arrange the visit.

WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Lynsey Addario, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and author of It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War, [shared her experiences](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/10/17/4-lessons-on-the-power-of-photography-from-photojournalist-lynsey-addario/) covering humanitarian crises and conflicts and stunning imagery at a packed public lecture.

COSTUME PARTY

Greenlee graduate students sponsored a [Halloween costume contest](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1872571332770160.1073741883.321168877910421&type=1&l=aa07cce789). Sherry Berghefer, Juli Probasco-Sowers and Monica Ernberger earned kudos for their creativity in the faculty, staff and student categories, respectively.

READY TO RUN

As part of her dual appointment with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, Assistant Professor Kelly Winfrey helped organize [Ready to Run Iowa](https://cattcenter.iastate.edu/events/ready-to-run-iowa/), a nonpartisan campaign training program for women. At a spring workshop, Winfrey offered her tips for stump speeches.

DIVERSITY DISCUSSIONS

Jaden Urbi (’17 journalism) and Courtney Crowder of the Des Moines Register received the first [Greenlee School and Kappa Tau Alpha Diversity and Inclusion Award](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/04/26/journalists-shine-light-on-diverse-communities-in-iowa/) in April 2017 in recognition for work that sheds lights on social justice topics.

CHANGE AGENT

[Student agencies](https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1672303542796941.1073741880.321168877910421&type=1&l=e7d337b87b) presented their ideas for intern recruitment to representatives from Rockwell Collins in the spring 2017 Advertising Campaigns (ADVRT 434) class. Gem Media took home first place.

HONOR SOCIETY

Kappa Tau Alpha initiated its newest members at the 2017 graduation brunch. Chapter leaders also announced a new name: [The Michael Bugeja Chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha at Iowa State University](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/05/11/faculty-names-isu-kappa-tau-alpha-chapter-after-outgoing-greenlee-school-director/).

RESEARCH FRIDAY

Greenlee welcomed [Robert Picard](https://greenlee.iastate.edu/2017/11/16/university-of-oxfords-robert-picard-shares-social-media-insights-during-greenlees-research-friday/) of the University of Oxford
last fall. The renowned scholar met with pre-tenure faculty and graduate students, attended classes and presented his research on the effects of social media.
