Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Iowa Bankers Association
Tara Deering-Hansen is vice president of marketing and communications at the Iowa Bankers Association in Johnston, Iowa.
Before joining the Iowa Bankers Association in 2019, she was principal of a Des Moines public relations firm specializing in public relations, corporate and strategic communications, and crisis consulting. From 2014-2017, she was group vice president of communications at Hy-Vee, Inc., where she oversaw external and internal communications for its 250 stores and 85,000 employees located across eight states. At Hy-Vee, Tara was responsible for the company’s strategic communication planning, development and execution of public relations campaigns, and oversight of media relations and crisis management. While there, her public relations efforts yielded Hy-Vee national media attention, and in 2015, she was recognized for her work in the grocery industry with Progressive Grocer’s Top Women in Grocery Rising Star Award.
Prior to joining Hy-Vee in 2014, Tara held the titles of corporate communications manager at Iowa Student Loan and Kum & Go, and public relations specialist at Two Rivers Marketing. Earlier in her career, she was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, Des Moines Register and Omaha World-Herald.
Tara graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and was the 1998-99 editor-in-chief of the Iowa State Daily. She currently serves on the ISU Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s Advisory Council and is an adjunct instructor in public relations at Drake University. She is a board member of Bravo Greater Des Moines and member of the Public Relations Society of America Central Iowa Chapter and the American Marketing Association Iowa Chapter. She resides in Clive, Iowa, with her husband, Bruce, and their three daughters.
