Art Slusark


Art Slusark is Vice President of Corporate Communications and Government Relations for Meredith Corp., the leading American media company serving women and owners and stewards of brands such as Better Homes and Gardens, Parents, Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, Fitness and More. In this role, Slusark serves as the company’s chief communications officer, overseeing all external and internal communications – including media relations, employee communications, and investor relations. Slusark also coordinates all Board-related and strategic planning activities; manages the Government Relations function, including federal and state lobbying; and oversees all of Meredith’s education, community and charitable initiatives. Based at corporate headquarters in Des Moines, he also oversees Meredith’s New York-based trade and consumer media relations.

Slusark – who joined Meredith in 1998 – has more than 30 years of experience as a journalist and public relations professional. He has planned, developed, managed and implemented an array of communications programs in investor relations, media relations, crisis management, employee communications, government relations and community relations.

Before joining Meredith, Slusark was the Director of Public Information for Baltimore-based Constellation Energy, one of the nation’s largest electric, nuclear and gas utilities. Prior to Constellation, he was Director of Public Relations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland. Earlier in his career, Slusark was a reporter and editor for several newspapers, including The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Times.

Slusark earned a Master of Administrative Science degree in Business Management from The Johns Hopkins University’s Carey School of Business in Baltimore, MD. His undergraduate degree is from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, with a double major in Journalism and Political Science.

Slusark is very active in educational and civic affairs. He currently sits on the Board of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and on the Simpson College Communications Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, where he is Past Board Chair of Choose Des Moines Communities and currently serves on the Downtown Community Alliance Board. He also is on the Boards of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Bravo Des Moines, the metro area’s overarching arts and cultural organization.

Slusark and his wife Nell (Hughes), also a graduate of Duquesne and Johns Hopkins and an Educational Consultant for Iowa Area Education Agencies, reside in Johnston, Iowa. They have three adult children – Kate, a communications professional for the Natural Resources Defense Council in New York City; Jane, Communications Director for U.S. Representative Leonard Boswell (D-IA); and Mike, Public Affairs analyst for New Media Strategies in Washington, DC.
